Reloading Student Training

This page describes both the Metallic Cartridge and Shotgun Shell Reloading student courses which are periodically offered by DR Security & Training.  Both of these courses are conducted in a classroom/lab session only - there are range activities.


NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor Training

Lesson Details 

LESSON I  - Introduction to Reloading and Reloading Safety (1 hr)

  • Describe the firing process

  • Explain the reloading process

  • Explain why people reload

  • Name and explain the fundamental safety rules for reloading

LESSON II  - Center-fire Cartridge Components (1 hr)

  • Give the proper nomenclature for center-fire cartridge components:

    • Cases

    • Primers

    • Powder, and

    • Bullets

  • State and explain the proper handling and storage procedures for cartridge components

LESSON III  - Using the Reloading Manual and Reloading Data (1 hr)

  • Select a suitable load for a particular cartridge from a reloading manual

  • Identify useful ballistics information in reloading manuals

LESSON IV  - The Metallic Cartridge Reloading Equipment (1 hr)

  • Identify the equipment necessary to reload metallic cartridges

  • Explain the proper operation and maintenance or reloading equipment

  • Explain the requirements for a basic reloading bench

LESSON V  - The Metallic Cartridge Reloading Process (1 hr)

  • Explain the proper techniques used to reload a metallic cartridge

  • Identify and explain the proper hygiene guidelines for handling lead and components

LESSON VI  - Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Practical Exercise (2 hrs)

  • Setup and operate reloading equipment

  • Reload a metallic cartridge

LESSON VII  - Course Review and Examination (1 hr)

  • Successfully complete the NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course written examination

NRA Shotgun Shell Reloading Instructor Training

Lesson Details

  • Identify useful ballistics information for shotgun shell in reloading manuals

LESSON IV  - The Metallic Cartridge Reloading Equipment (1 hr)

  • Identify the equipment necessary to reload shotgun shell

  • Explain the proper operation and maintenance or reloading equipment
