NRA Personal Protection in the Home Instructor Training

Lesson Details 

PRE-COURSE ASSESSMENT - Classroom

  • Safely load and unload all available demonstration firearms, covering at least:

  • Double-action Revolver

  • Semi-automatic Pistol

  • Complete rifle shooting exercises as follows:

  • Two-handed Standing Position

  • One-handed Standing Position

  • Two-handed Standing Position different action type

  • All shots must hit target

LESSON SIX (40 min) - Classroom

  • Introduction to NRA Basic Personal Protection Shooting Course Lesson Plans

LESSON SEVEN (60 min) - Classroom

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson I: Introduction to Defensive Shooting

LESSON EIGHT (180 min) - Range

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson II: Basic Defensive Handgun Skills

LESSON NINE (30 min) - Classroom

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson III: Firearms and the Law, Possession, Ownership and the Use of Deadly Force

LESSON TEN (60 min) - Classroom

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson IV: Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation

LESSON ELEVEN (40 min) - Classroom

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson V: Selecting a Handgun for Self-Defense

LESSON TWELVE (30 min) - Classroom

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson VI: Sports Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities

  • EXTRA – If time permits (62 min) - Classroom

    • Video: Basics of Personal Protection (NRA)

LESSON THIRTEEN (90 min) - Classroom

  • Teaching Personal Protection Lesson VII: Course Review and Examination

  • Student evaluations

  • Importance of student recognition

  • Take instructor certification test (in place of student test): Score of 90% required for full certification

  • Applying to the NRA for certification
