New York State Armed Guard Training

DR Security & Training is authorized to provide the New York State Armed Guard Training courses.

Armed Security guards in New York State are required to complete specific firearms training and qualification.  New applicants are required to take a complete 47-hour training course, and existing armed guards are required to take an 8-hour annual refresher course.  DR Security & Training conduct both of these courses on a regular basis.

General Information

The Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety provides administrative oversight for private security training in New York State. The New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services has oversight responsibility for the licensing and registration of all security guards and private security training schools.

8-Hr Annual Firearms Training Course

Part One – Classroom (two hours)

 

TITLE – USE OF Force / Deadly Physical Force – (Penal Law Article 35)

OBJECTIVES

 

Part Two – Range (six hours)

  1. Qualification practice – (50 rounds, approx.)

  2. Qualification – (150 rounds)

a.      Three courses of fire with both the ‘High’ score and ‘Average’ score recorded.

b.      Minimum score for passing will be 175 out of a possible 250, as follows:

  • Factors relevant to the selection of a handgun or shoulder weapon by considering type of incident and geographical location

  • Proper Procedures for approaching and controlling a potential assailant in close quarters

  • Use of Force - Legal Issues -  Part 1: (Penal Law Article 35)

 Session Five - Classroom & Range

 

Alternate 47-hr Training Curriculum

An alternative method of completing the NYS 47-hr curriculum would be the completion of a mix of DR Security course follows:

  1. Credit can only be given for courses conducted by DR Security

  2. Instructor and Student courses of a discipline will be given the same credit

  3. Hours credit given for each course may be less than the courses themselves due to content applicability and/or duplication of material

    Required Equipment

    • Duty Handgun of at least .38 caliber capable of shooting a minimum of 6 rounds without reloading

    • Strong-side holster

    • A minimum of 150 rounds of duty ammunition
