Maryland Handgun Permit Training


INITIAL CERTIFICATION

Lesson Details 

Safety Lecture – Classroom (3 Hours)

  • Introduction

  • Ammunition

  • Firearm nomenclature load/unload

  • Basic Firearm safety

  • Care, cleaning and storage

  • Student demonstration – safe gun handling

  • Examination – NRA Basic Pistol

Legal Implications – Classroom (1 Hour)

  • Application rules

  • State of Maryland Laws (COMAR, Section 29.03)

    • Carrying your permit

    • Where carry is prohibited

    • How to present credential to Law Enforcement

    • Legal use of deadly force

  • Reciprocity with other States

Qualification – Range (6 Hours)

  • Range safety rules

  • Firearms & ammunition inspection

  • Dry Firing

  • Shooting stances and positions

  • Sight alignment and sight picture

  • Practice Drills

  • Practical shooting Qualification (see Qualification Course of Fire below) - Maximum of three attempts for 70% score

TOTAL

  • 10-Hour Classroom & Range


RENEWAL CERTIFICATION

Lesson Details 

Safety Lecture – Classroom (1 Hour)

  • Introduction

  • Review Basic Firearm safety

  • Student demonstration – safe gun handling

Legal Implications – Classroom (30 mins)

  • Updated rules (COMAR, Section 29.03)

    • Carrying your permit

    • Where carry is prohibited

    • Legal use of deadly force

  • Reciprocity with other States

Qualification – Range (3 1/2 Hours)

  • Range safety rules

  • Firearms & ammunition inspection

  • Practice Drills

  • Practical shooting Qualification (see Qualification Course of Fire below) - Maximum of three attempts for 70% score required

  • 5-Hour Classroom & Range
